CBD Oil for Dogs: What Clinical Trials or Scientific Research Has Been Done?

CBD oil for dogs has become one of the most talked about natural supplements in recent years. And while success stories abound, we're finding out what actual scientific research has been done to confirm the safety and effectiveness of CBD oil for dogs.

There is still much work to be done with CBD in both humans and animals, but the results we have so far are promising.

Research # 1: Increased pain relief and activity in arthritic dogs (Cornell University)

Cornell University researchers found that CBD oil for dogs eased pain and increased activity in dogs suffering from arthritis, according to research published in July 2018 in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science. This clinical research suggests that 2 mg per kg of CBD twice daily can help relieve pain and increase activity in dogs with osteoarthritis.

Research # 2: Significantly reduced pain and improved functional performance (Liberty Leaf)

Published in August 2018, the results of this randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial showed that dogs with diagnosed osteoarthritis who received a daily dose of just 0.3 mg per kg of CBD oil for four weeks showed significantly reduced pain and improved functional performance .

Research # 3: Pain Reduction and Improved Mobility (Colorado State University)

A Colorado State University clinical trial in April 2020 looked at the impact of their hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) product on dogs suffering from chronic osteoarthritis pain. The 90-day study was overseen by Robin Downing and involved 32 dogs suffering from chronic arthritic pain for at least 3 months. The research found that the addition of full-spectrum CBD oil resulted in significant benefits for 94% of the dogs tested

  • pain reduction
  • improving mobility
  • improved quality of life

Research # 4: 89% Seizure Reduction in Epileptic Dogs (Colorado State University)

Scientists at Colorado State University have focused on research into CBD oil as a viable treatment for epilepsy in dogs. Over 24 weeks, dogs that experienced at least two seizures per month were given either CBD oil or a placebo. Preliminary results published in July 2018 showed that a surprising 89% test dogs showed a reduction in regular seizures.

Research # 5: CBD Safety and Method of Application (Colorado State University)

In 2016, Colorado State University completed work on a pharmacokinetic and safety study of CBD oil for dogs in healthy dogs, which was the first to show that the compound is measurable in the blood. Research shows that the use of CBD in dogs is safe enough to warrant research in a clinical population.

For the research, 30 healthy dogs received 2 different doses of CBD in 3 different ways of application: capsules, oil tincture and cream applied to the skin. The results showed that CBD administered orally in an oil tincture is the most absorbed and utilized in the body. That is why the recommendation is always to buy CBD in oil instead of CBD treats or otherwise.

Research # 6: CBD shows improvement in symptoms of atopic dermatitis (CannaPal Animal Therapeutics)

A study by CannaPal Animal Therapeutics in July 2020 tested 13 dogs suffering from skin allergies (atopic dermatitis). After 56 days, veterinary specialists in dermatology evaluated the results. They studied skin lesions and specific areas of the body that are typically affected by atopic dermatitis.

The research concluded that dogs using CBD oil for dogs were more likely to see a significant reduction in atopic dermatitis symptoms. In fact, dogs on the two CBD formulas had 51% reductions in certain scores, meaning fewer symptoms were present after the study.

CBD oil for inflammatory bowel syndrome

Multiple trials have shown promising results in relieving the symptoms of inflammatory bowel syndrome in humans. Other research shows that CBD can slow the course of the disease, improve symptoms, and increase the effectiveness of available medications to treat disorders such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease.

CBD oil in treatment-resistant epilepsy

Scientists surveyed a group of parents to get information about their children's experiences with treatment-resistant epilepsy. Nineteen people participated who used CBD oil to treat their children. 84% children were found to experience fewer seizures after taking CBD.

CBD oil helps mice with acute pancreatitis

Studies with mice have shown that treatment with cannabidiol successfully reduces enzyme activity within the tissue of the pancreatic organ. CBD has shown anti-inflammatory properties that lead to "improved pathological changes".

Generalized social anxiety disorder

Researchers administered doses of CBD oil or a placebo drug to people with generalized social anxiety disorder to determine the possible anxiolytic properties of CBD. They measured cerebral blood flow before and after treatment and found that CBD oil was associated with reduced subjective anxiety.
