What if you have to stay in the emergency room with your dog

The moment you realize that you have to take your dog to the emergency room, prepare for a situation where both you and the dog will stay there.

Vigo and I spent 24 hours in the emergency room, with 2 trips home and an emergency return. That meant no sleep, no bed, no food for us. You have a hard and cold floor or table for the dog, and an uncomfortable chair for you.

In one of the phone calls in which I submitted a report on Vigo, after some 20 hours in the emergency room, my mother asked me "how are you?". I didn't think about it until that moment. I haven't slept for about 35 hours, minus 2 hours before the X-ray when we were home for a short time and I haven't eaten for more than 24 hours. I lay with Vigo in his XL Bean Bag pillow and I told my mom "if I didn't have Vig's pillow, I wouldn't have lasted on the floor or the chair for this long, the pillow saved us both."

Prepare for that scenario, take everything for the dog, but also for yourself: water, food, book, mobile phone charger, pillow, warm and comfortable clothes. If you can't eat under stress like me, take magnesium in effervescent tablets, an energy bar, soup, whatever you can bring and force yourself to eat at least a bite every now and then, because you have to have energy for your dog.

In addition to your dog, take care of the people around your dog, because you know your dog best. Ask people in the waiting room not to approach the dog to pet it, as this can upset it. Ask the staff to approach him slowly and give him time to relax. Maybe it's better if you take his temperature, because then he won't get upset and will continue to lie still. Provide space and time for your dog.
