Some dogs can't wait to jump in the car, while others shudder at the thought of getting in and driving. While driving, they can be awake, restless, and can even stand the whole way, but they can also sleep peacefully or calmly look out the window.
But in any case, if you are traveling with your muzzle, careful planning and attention is required before and during the trip. Here are some tips from experience on how to travel on short and long trips with your dog...
What to pack?
To make the dog comfortable during the trip, but also when you arrive at your destination, bring everything your dog will need. Vigo and I often travel on short and long trips and to help you, we have made a list for the trip, which you can even print out if you want 🙂
The stress of driving
For a long time, I observed and searched for the reason why some dogs stand for hours in the car while driving, are restless or even whine during the entire journey. I wondered what it was that made them restless and alert. My dogs always had the full comfort of the rear lowered bench and enough space to stand up, turn around or lie down at full length, but even they didn't sleep during long drives.
On one occasion, I decided to travel like a dog on four legs and check what it looks like from a dog's perspective. I know, it's not very common and I don't think you should try it 🙂 But this test answered the questions that were bothering me and I want to share it with everyone who walks their dogs.
Namely, when you're a dog on four legs and you ride on the back lowered bench, upright bench or empty trunk, you're missing the key thing for a pleasant trip, which is support. The driver and passenger, each in their own anatomical seat, drive without significantly feeling the forces generated while driving. These forces are created when moving, braking, in turns or passing over lying policemen and potholes in the road. When you are a dog, you have to resist these forces with your whole body in order to maintain balance, and lying down is quite uncomfortable when you start to be "carried" by a bend or braking on a car. And all this at the lowest speeds, such as moving at a traffic light, braking lightly or going through any bend.
It was really uncomfortable and I couldn't drive like that for a long time. At the same time, it was amazing to me how the dogs actually put up with it and still love us unconditionally 🙂 I decided to jump into it and find a solution for my dogs, but also for everyone else who rides with their owners.
Just as we fit comfortably in a seat adapted to the human physiognomy, so do dogs need an anatomical adjustment of the place where they lie while driving. None of the available pet supplies met that simple, yet so important, requirement. Unfortunately, a few more years passed before the solution presented itself to me completely unexpectedly.
Eureka!
Vigo enjoyed all the benefits of his home Bean Bag dog beds and when we decided to go to sea, I took his orthopedic bed in order to have it on the ferry, the beach and the apartment. I put the dog bed on the back lowered bench, where the Vigo is driven. While driving, Vigo was always awake and would relentlessly stop, no matter how many hours the drive lasted. I didn't think this time would be any different. But soon after we started, I didn't see his muzzle in the rearview mirror. This confused me and I immediately turned around to see what was happening on the back seat. In that split second, I saw Vigo lying on the pillow. Then I asked my passenger to look at what Vigo was doing and I got the answer that Vigo was sleeping.
At that moment, all the puzzles in my head fell into place and I realized that the Bean Bag balls in the bed provide stability and support for the dog's body while driving. Since then, the Bean Bag dog bed has been an indispensable part of the equipment for longer trips. And so look for a Bean Bag for your muzzle here.

A few more important things for traveling with a dog:
- do not feed the dog immediately before the trip
- tire the dog before the trip
- give him water during the journey
- often stop for a pee-break, approx. every 2 hours
- at rest areas, always take the dog out of the car on a leash
- gradually teach younger dogs to take longer rides in the car
- pay attention to the temperature in the car, as well as exposure to direct sunlight through the windows
- never, not even "for a minute", leave the dog closed in the car
- attach your contact phone to the dog's collar and have a picture of the dog with you
- bring a bath towel and, for some, sunscreen
- bring cookies and toys according to the dog's wishes
I wish your muzzle and you a calm sea and pleasant dreams 🙂
