Pets in the workplace

A: Can I take my dog to work?

B: Unfortunately not. Such is the company's policy.

A: Thanks for the conversation, but I will have to decline your offer.

Are you ready to do this? How important is it to you to be able to take your pet to work?

Dog owners can't imagine life without them, and more and more people consider pets members of the family. At work, we are used to being without them, so when the last second of working time ticks, we run faster and faster home to our little ones.

Fortunately, the worldwide trend of bringing pets to work is on the rise. The number of employers who allow it is growing quite slowly, but at least it is starting to become more normal to have a pet in the office. Which was unthinkable until a few years ago.

Research has shown many advantages of pets in a random place. Some of them are:

REDUCTION OF STRESS

Stress, stress, stress... Nowadays everything is stress. How many times have you heard "It's because of stress"? I don't know about you, but it seems to me more and more when the doctor doesn't know what's wrong with you - stress! Of course, today's fast-paced lifestyle full of obligations contributes to this. People have less and less time for themselves, and pets are exactly the ones who reduce our stress, cheer us up and make us take time for ourselves (with them, of course 😊). Research on pets in the workplace has also shown that employees who share space with pets are more relaxed. Their presence can significantly improve the physical and psychological health of workers. To begin with, the owner is more relaxed and worry-free because he knows that the pet is cared for and safe. As for other collaborators, we all know that contact with animals, even for 10 seconds, improves mood and provides a sense of calm.

I ENCOURAGE INTERACTION / CONNECTION OF ASSOCIATES

Communication is the most important thing in interpersonal relations, so it is also in the workplace. Good employee interaction is key to the company's success. Research has shown that animals can facilitate human interaction and make it much better. Even those who don't bring their pets to work will say that having animals in the work environment helps bond with colleagues. Of course, you will immediately improve communication with other animal lovers (and more people love animals), and pets are a good topic for breaking the ice. And yes, you will most likely remember the name of the colleague who pet your pet sooner.

MAINTENANCE OF ACTIVITIES

Sitting continuously for several hours has a negative impact on physical, psychological and mental health. It can increase the risk of obesity, diabetes and many other diseases. That's why medical experts recommend that if you have a job where you sit all the time, stretch your legs for 5 minutes every hour. So what's better for that than a short walk with a muzzle. In this way, you will also serve as a reminder to all other employees that from time to time it is necessary to take a break, step away from the computer and take a walk.

FUN AND CREATIVITY

We all know that pets are often playful, and this has a considerable effect on the environment in which they are found. For example, if a dog walks around the office, it results in at least a short-term break from business tasks and entertainment, and thus encourages creativity for new business projects.

INCREASE IN PRODUCTIVITY / MORE HOURS IN THE OFFICE

Now let's move on to the main reason why more and more employers are allowing employees to bring pets to work. Research has shown that an animal in the office increases employee productivity. It has been shown that even though pets are a bit of a distraction, they make us more productive. It sounds counterintuitive, but studies show that short distractions from work are actually a good thing. Interruption of work, even for a minute or two, increases the quality of work and efficiency throughout the rest of the working time. Another reason is that owners who bring their pet to work have no problem staying longer in the office. Simply because they have less worries and know that the pet is taken care of. One American study even showed that owners who can bring their dog to work, in addition to having no problem staying longer, tend to take less annual leave.

So employers, this is a reason for you to allow employees to bring pets into the business offices.

We have to be honest and point out the negative sides of pets at work, which was shown by an American study. And while the owners and animal lovers did not point out the negative sides, others did. The biggest problems were barking/meowing, hair problems and the tidiness of the business premises.

How is it in Croatia?

I came across a survey from 2009 made by the MojPosao portal. More than half of respondents, more precisely 58 percent of the 600 included in the sample, support bringing pets to the workplace. Employers don't complain either, especially if they realize that pets in the workplace cheer up, reduce stress levels, bond employees and can even increase productivity.

However, only 18% respondents believe that bringing pets to the workplace has no negative sides.

Although because of this upper, first percentage, you would think that Croatia is great, the reality is a little different. Thus, only 15 percent of respondents have the option of bringing pets to the workplace, and the majority, 68 percent, do not have such an option. The remaining 17 percent of respondents do not know the company's position on this.

The opportunity to bring pets to work is mostly available to respondents who work in smaller companies, so 23 percent of respondents who work in a company with less than 50 employees have the opportunity to bring a pet to the workplace. Only six percent of respondents who work in large companies with more than 200 employees have the same opportunity.

In companies that allow pets, dogs are most often welcome, in 41 percent of cases, and to a lesser extent cats (12 percent) and fish (11 percent). All pets are welcome in 11 percent of cases.

This research is from 2009, I hope the situation has improved since then 😊 Feel free to contact us on our social networks with your experience 😊
