How to stop diarrhea in dogs

Find out why 'Chicken and Rice' is one of the worst things to feed a sick dog

It is the most accessible solution that is built into our brain when we have a sick dog suffering from any form of digestive disorders.

If we take a closer look at these two apparently "easy to digest" foods, the vet's advice might be the last thing we should follow.

First, let's look at rice. Rice is a grain that has pro-inflammatory properties. Dogs do not digest rice very well. It takes a lot of energy and work for the body to break it down. Rice is a carbohydrate and we know that dogs have low dietary requirements for carbohydrates. White rice has a high glycemic index, meaning it will cause a rapid spike in blood glucose levels. White rice is too starchy to be part of a dog's daily diet, and it is especially bad if the dog suffers from inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract.

Chicken is one of the two most common foods to which dogs are intolerant and causes reactions in many dogs. One possible reason is that most people feed their dogs factory-raised chicken rather than organic chicken. The intensively raised chicken is fed grain (often GMO grain), pumped with growth hormones, antibiotics and vaccinated several times in its short lifespan. No wonder our dogs have problems with chicken. Some dogs can eat organic chicken without digestive problems.

In addition (of course, not all dogs have a problem with chicken), chicken is considered a 'hot food' in Chinese medicine. We certainly don't want to feed our sick dog 'hot' food, but rather 'cold food' that will help clear heat and toxins and cool and calm the blood.

What should we feed a sick dog?

According to Dr. Karen Becker – cooked ground turkey or lean turkey breast and cooked or canned pumpkin.

Why is pumpkin recommended instead of rice as the basis of a mild diet?

Canned pumpkin (100%) provides about 80 calories and 7 grams of soluble fiber per cup, compared to 1.2 grams of fiber in a cup of cooked white rice. Pumpkin is especially rich in soluble fiber. These fibers dissolve in water and form a viscous gel, which also coats and soothes irritated intestines. Soluble fiber delays gastric emptying, slowing gastrointestinal transit time and the frequency of diarrhea.

When animals have diarrhea, they can lose important electrolytes, including potassium, putting them at risk of dehydration. Hypokalemia, or low potassium, can result in cramps, fatigue, weakness, and irregular heartbeat. Pumpkin is an excellent source of potassium with 505 milligrams of potassium per cup. Pumpkin is also safer for diabetics. Unlike rice which is a grain and will eventually break down into sugar, pumpkin extracts can actually restore beta cell function. Beta cells are cells that produce insulin in the pancreas.

Rice is a mild source of fiber and is not the most suitable choice for a carnivore diet. First, it is unnecessary food. Dogs and cats do not have dietary needs for grains. Thus, feeding pets with pro-inflammatory food, when they already have a gastrointestinal disorder, seems counterintuitive. In addition, rice can also contain arsenic.

There are many cases where the dog, after the vet's recommendation to eat rice, still has diarrhea. Many owners notice whole grains of rice in their stool, which raises the question of how much of this carbohydrate is actually digested in the dog's digestive system.

Do a detox!

The cause of diarrhea can be toxins introduced through food or if the dog ate something while walking. Medications such as corticosteroids, antibiotics, phenobarbital and others have a negative effect. Vaccination and the use of chemical insecticides can have a negative effect, and oral insecticides such as Nexgard, Bravecto and Simparica tablets.

You can easily do natural detoxification with Zeolite clinoptilolite powder.

For natural protection against fleas and ticks, choose natural preparations such as BioGarda and Herba Max products.
